What Age Is Best for Family Photos?

This is one of the most common questions Bryan and I hear from parents.

“Is there a best age for family photos?”

And honestly… the answer might surprise you.

There really isn’t one.

Every stage of life brings something beautiful, something fleeting, and something worth remembering. What matters most isn’t the “perfect age,” it’s capturing the season of life you’re in right now.

Because the truth is — those seasons change faster than we realize.

Instead of focusing on the “best” age, it can be more helpful to think about what kind of moments you’d like your photos to capture. Each stage of a baby’s first year brings a completely different feeling to the images.

Here’s a little glimpse of what that looks like.

0–3 Months: The Sweet, Sleepy Stage

During the first few months, babies are often still very sleepy and snuggly. They aren’t holding their heads up yet, so sessions tend to feel softer and more peaceful.

This stage is perfect for capturing those quiet moments — tiny fingers wrapped around yours, baby curled up in your arms, and that overwhelming feeling of “we just brought this little human into the world.”

3–6 Months: Hello, Smiles

Around this age, babies are much more awake and aware of the world around them.

This is when we start seeing those adorable gummy smiles, bright eyes looking around the room, and little personalities beginning to show. It’s such a joyful stage because babies are interacting more with mom and dad.

6–9 Months: Big Personality

By this point, babies are usually sitting up and becoming much more responsive. They laugh, play, and react to everything.

This stage is full of big smiles, curious expressions, and genuine joy. It’s often one of the most playful ages to photograph because babies are engaged and expressive.

9–12+ Months: First Steps and Big Giggles

This is when things really start moving.

Babies begin pulling themselves up, attempting those first steps, and exploring everything around them. Sessions at this age are full of movement, laughter, and those unforgettable milestone moments.

Capturing those early steps, wobbly walks, and giant giggles creates photos that parents treasure forever.

The Truth About “The Best Age”

At the end of the day, every stage of parenthood holds something special.

The sleepy snuggles.
The gummy smiles.
The big belly laughs.
The first steps.

There isn’t a wrong time to capture your family.

Bryan and I truly believe that documenting each season of life in its truest form is always beautiful. Because when you look back years from now, you won’t wish you had waited for the “perfect age.”
